Bay windows are a stunning architectural feature, adding light, character and space to any room. Whether you have a classic Victorian splay bay, a more modern square box bay, or a unique L-shaped dogleg bay, custom-made plantation shutters can enhance their shape and styleโwhile offering excellent control over light, privacy and insulation.
At Berkshire Blinds and Shutters, we understand that no two bay windows are the same, and thatโs why we offer expertly fitted, made-to-measure shutters designed to complement the unique contours of your home.

Understanding the Types of Bay Windows
There are several common styles of bay windows, and each brings its own charmโand challengeโwhen it comes to shutters:
Splay Bays (3, 5 or even 7 sections): Also known as angled bays, these are the most common in period properties. Each section needs to be carefully measured for consistent spacing and visual symmetry.
Box Bays (Square Bays): These feature right angles and can work especially well with a more modern shutter finish for a sleek, tailored look.
Dogleg or L-Shaped Bays: These typically feature two panels forming an angled returnโoften in hallways or kitchensโand require precise corner alignment for a seamless effect.
Creating a Seamless, Stylish Finish
When fitting plantation shutters to bay windows, attention to detail is everything. One of the techniques we often use is the inclusion of T-posts, which allow us to line up the shutter frames perfectly with the windowโs existing mullions. This gives a beautifully uniform appearance and helps the shutters feel like a natural extension of the window.
If youโre opting for full height shutters, we typically recommend adding a mid-rail. Not only does this align with a natural break in your window (such as a horizontal glazing bar), but it also allows you to control the top and bottom louvers separatelyโperfect for balancing light and privacy throughout the day.
Why Tier-on-Tier Isnโt Ideal for Bays
While tier-on-tier shutters can be fantastic for straight windows, theyโre not generally the best choice for bays. Thatโs because when you open the top section, the shutter panels tend to swing across adjacent windowsโblocking light and breaking up the symmetry of the bay. In a space designed to let the light flood in, this can actually make the room feel darker and more cluttered.
Instead, full-height shutters with split control often provide the best of both worldsโstyle, functionality, and a neat, cohesive look that enhances your bay windowโs shape. Or choose Cafe Shutters to offer privacy on the lower window whilst maximising the light at the top.
Bespoke Shutters. Expertly Fitted.
Because bay windows vary so much in size and angle, accurate measurement and expert fitting are absolutely essential. Our experienced surveyors ensure every panel is tailored precisely to the spaceโdown to the millimetre. The result is shutters that not only look great, but work perfectly too.
We believe that plantation shutters should enhance the beauty of your home, not fight against its quirks. Thatโs why we take the time to understand your windowโs shape and your personal preferencesโso you get the perfect finish every time.
