💡 Why Choose MDF Shutters?
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a robust, engineered wood composite that’s harder and more impact-resistant than many timber shutters. While often underestimated, MDF performs exceptionally well in real-world conditions — especially in spaces where other shutters might struggle with wear and tear.
Here’s why MDF shutters could be the perfect fit for your home:
✅ Resistant to dents and knocks – ideal for homes with young children or pets
✅ Great value for money – one of the most affordable shutter ranges we offer
✅ Smooth, painted finish – clean lines and timeless style
✅ Low maintenance – easy to clean and long-lasting
✅ Available in 6 on-trend colours to suit most interior palettes
Looking for shutters that are tough enough for toy traffic, footfall, or daily life? Vazon MDF could be your answer.
🚪 Ideal for Shutter Doors and High-Traffic Areas
One of the key strengths of MDF shutters is their impact resistance — which makes them especially well-suited for installations such as:
• Tracked Shutter doors (e.g. patio or bifold door openings)
• Children’s bedrooms and playrooms
• Busy hallways or boot rooms
• Homes with pets or active families
Because MDF is denser than lightweight wood or ABS slat shutters, it’s less prone to denting, making it a solid choice for shutters that may come into contact with toys, bags, or passing feet.
🎚️ Tilt Rod Options – Classic or Contemporary Control
Our Vazon MDF Shutters are available with a choice of tilt rod styles, allowing you to customise the look and feel to suit your home:
• Traditional Centre Tilt Rod
A visible rod running down the centre of the panel — ideal for classic interiors and traditional window styles.
• Offset Tilt Rod
Positioned to the side of the panel, this option keeps the slats central but creates a cleaner look, especially for full-height shutters.
• Concealed Tilt Mechanism
No visible rod at all. Simply tilt one slat by hand to adjust the whole panel. A sleek, minimal look that suits modern interiors.
Each tilt style offers smooth, easy operation and the same level of control over light and privacy — it’s simply a matter of personal preference.
📏 Slat Sizes – Tailor the Look and Light Control
Our Vazon MDF shutters are available in a range of slat sizes, giving you control over both the appearance and the functionality of your shutters.
Larger slats create a more open, airy feel and let in more light when tilted open. Smaller slats offer greater privacy and a more traditional look.
Available Slat Sizes:
• 63mm – Classic and proportioned, ideal for smaller windows & bay windows
• 76mm – The most popular size, offering a balance of light and privacy
• 89mm – Wider slats for a more contemporary, open feel
• 114mm – Bold and modern, ideal for taller windows

Are MDF shutters durable?
Yes — MDF shutters are extremely durable and impact-resistant. They’re an ideal choice for shutter doors, hallways, and family rooms, especially where knocks and bumps from toys, pets, or bags are likely.
Can MDF shutters be used in bathrooms or kitchens?
MDF shutters are not recommended for high-moisture environments. If you’re looking for shutters in a bathroom, kitchen, or utility room, we suggest our Herm shutters, which are moisture-resistant.
What slat sizes are available in the Vazon MDF range?
Our MDF shutters are available in 63mm, 76mm, 89mm, and 114mm slat sizes. Your choice will depend on your style preferences and how much light/privacy you want. 👉 View our Shutter Slat Size Guide
Are MDF shutters heavier than other materials?
Yes — MDF is denser and heavier than ABS or wood shutters. For this reason, we usually limit the panel size slightly to ensure longevity and ease of use.
Can I choose different tilt rod styles with MDF shutters?
Absolutely. Vazon MDF shutters are available with a centre tilt rod, an offset tilt rod, or a concealed tilt mechanism, depending on the style you’re after.
How many colours are available in the Vazon MDF range?
The Vazon range is available in six popular painted colours designed to suit a wide variety of interior styles. Our consultants can show you samples during a showroom or Zoom consultation.
⚠️ Limitations to Consider – Heavier & Not Moisture-Resistant
While MDF shutters are extremely tough and cost-effective, they do have a few limitations to be aware of:
• Heavier than wood or ABS Slat Shutters – not recommended for very large panels or unusually shaped windows
• Not moisture-resistant – not suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms, or kitchens with high humidity
• Painted finish only – unlike wood shutters, MDF is not available in stained or natural grain finishes
That’s why we may recommend ABS Slat (Alderney) or Basswood (Fermain) shutters for those specialist spaces — and we’re always happy to advise on what’s best for your home.
