Shutter slats (also known as louvres) in the UK, come in several standard sizes, each offering distinct aesthetic and functional benefits.
The 5 most common slat widths include:
47mm Slats
Ideal for traditional designs and smaller windows, these slats provide a classic appearance. However, they allow less light when open due to the increased number of slats per panel. These narrower Louvers are sometimes likened to French Shutter, and are only available on a select range of shutter materials.
63mm Slats
Offering a balance between traditional and modern styles, 63mm slats are versatile and suitable for various window sizes. They permit moderate light entry and maintain a cosy ambiance. These louvres require only slight adjustment to offer basic privacy and therefore maintain more natural light.
76mm Slats
Popular for their contemporary look, these slats allow more light into the room and provide a clearer view when open, making them suitable for medium to large windows.
89mm Slats
Favoured in modern interiors, 89mm slats offer a minimalist aesthetic with fewer slats per panel, resulting in increased light and a less obstructed view.
114mm Slats
Best suited for large windows or expansive spaces, these slats provide maximum light entry and a bold, contemporary appearance.
When choosing the appropriate slat size, consider the following factors:
- Window Size: Larger slats complement bigger windows, offering a proportional and uncluttered look, while smaller slats are better suited for compact windows.
- Light and Privacy Control: Larger slats allow more light and a clearer view when open but offer less privacy. Smaller slats provide greater privacy and a more diffused light effect.
- Interior Style: Traditional homes may benefit from smaller slats that align with classic designs, whereas modern interiors often favour larger slats for a sleek, contemporary feel.In addition to the above, it is important to understand that a larger louvre requires more space in front of window or door handles to rotate. This may make them less practical in windows with narrow recesses, or in Bay windows.Ultimately, the choice of slat size should align with your aesthetic preferences and functional requirements to enhance both the appearance and comfort of your space.
